Visit These 4 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Barcelona

Barcelona is home to nine UNESCO World Heritage sites, many the works of beloved architects of Catalan Modernism, Antoni Gaudí and Lluís Domènech i Montaner. These sites are some of the most-visited in the city. Here’s a list of some of the city’s must-see sites on the UNESCO list.

1. Park Güell

A public park masterpiece by Gaudí, this imaginative outdoor space is located on Carmel Hill in the Gràcia District. The park is referred to as the face of Catalan modernism, where architecture becomes part of the environment with organic shapes and an array of materials.

Visit: Hours vary depending on the season, so check times here. Some areas of the park are free of charge, but we recommend you pay for access to the “Monumental Core,” where all the good stuff is. Purchase tickets online. Interested in a guided tour? Check times according to specified language ahead of time.

2. Hospital de Sant Pau

This stellar design (pictured) is by Lluís Domènech i Montaner. Used as a fully-functional hospital up until 2009, the hospital is an impressive example of a public healthcare building. Tour its beautiful interiors and pristine outdoor spaces. Make sure to check out the Sant Rafael Pavilion, which recreates a 1920s ward.

Visit: General admission runs roughly 15 euros, and a guided tour or audio tour is just a few euros more. Guided visits last 1.15 hours and are highly recommended. Buy your ticket ahead of time direct. Check seasonal hours here.

3. Palau de la Música Catalana

The art nouveau concert hall described as a “magical music box” is another fantastic creation by architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. Finished in 1908, the iron structure is a treat for the eyes and prime example of modernisme with stained glass and mosaics that mimic nature.

Visit: Book an hour-long guided tour to get a proper scope of the building during the day and see how the natural light filters in, or opt to see a show. Flamenco guitar concerts are a popular draw for tourists — but make sure to get there early so you can take a good look around. See what’s in store ahead of time in the hall’s seasonal programme.

4. Casa Vicens

In case you didn’t know, Casa Vicens is a new point of interest in Barcelona since it opened as a museum at the end of 2017. Ironically enough, it’s one of the first art nouveau buildings in the city and the first commissioned work of Gaudí. Designed as a home, it’s a great spot for those who want to dig deeper into Catalunya’s favorite architect. It provides info on other architects at the time and Gaudí’s growth.

Visit: Open 10-8 daily, we recommend a tour for visitors to have a more nuanced understanding of the work. Buy tickets online with Casa Vicens for a hefty discount. Casa Vicens is located in the heart of Barcelona, so easily accessible via public transit. More info here.
